Elsevier Science is a large publisher of scientific books and journals,
electronic products and databases. Yearly more than 100,000 scientific articles
are published within 1,100+ journal titles. Each year more than 200 books
appear.
-
Elsevier is heavily involved in the development of network-based electronic
products. Currently, a number of prototypes are already available at the
Elsevier Science home page.
-
Elsevier uses SGML as a primary structuring resource for its publications.
From this a multitude of different products is generated, each with its own
presentation style. Each presentation style evolves over time.
-
Style sheets for HTML-based products will greatly enhance Elsevier's
flexibility for the presentation of diverse types of information. In addition,
developments in the World Wide Web can be followed with more versatility
by
separating structure from presentation.
-
Elsevier Science has identified more than 1,000 special symbols (math,
greek, typographic, etc.) of which a very small percentage is covered by
the ISO
Latin-1 (ISO 8859-1) character set. In this Elsevier character set, accented
characters are not counted, since these are treated differently from the
ISO
approach.
