Ruth's notes on visit by Tim Berners-Lee, re World Wide Web
   (w3).

These are my informal notes about what was done with w3
   last week.

My goal of the week's visit was to provide as much exposure
for w3 as possible, and to do as much as possible towards an
evaluation of the utility, functionality, quality, robustness,
support and directions of this product.

Prior to his arrival we had scheduled a computing
techniques seminar on the product, and Janet Weber installed the
W3 client on a sun sparc1 for evaluation (needed approx 4 hours
   work?).

During Tim's visit the following servers and clients were
installed for evaluation at peoples request.

   1. Hepnet group client and server for accessing hepnet groups
       information.

   2. Upgrade of client on NeXts of the theory group and demo of
spires access (they like the idea of immediate feedback on
new citations for their papers in spires)

   3. Client and server at D0 to access D0 unix documents

   4. Client on Lynn Garrens decserver for evaluation

   5. Client on astrophysics sun at Yerkes observatory, and links
       to astrohpysics information centers

   6. Client on Online Support fndaub cluster

   7. Server on fnal to provide access to DOCDB - the central
       repository of Online Support documentation

The following evaluations were started but were not
   successfully completed:

   1. Provision of x browser on IRIX (only works on SunOS and
       Ultrix at the moment)

   2. Provision of MAC browser - crashes with a bug; need to get
       the sources

In addition Tim worked with the System Integration Support
Group/ACCESS, and talked with Mark Kaletka about network impact,
Liz Quigg on hypermedia aspects, Chih-Hao about MISCOMP, Art
   Kreymer about experimenter viewpoints.

                                                                Page 2

From conversations I have had with various people I am
positive towards continuing the evaluation process for the short
term. My hope is that ACCESS will be able to continue putting
some resources into coordinating and executing this effort,
together with some help from Hepnet, OLS and HQSTAFF.

A major goal is to understand what resources would be
required to 1) provide Fermilab support for client W3 services.
   2) installing/developing servers for existing pools of
information 3) writing subsequent documentation in hypertext for
use with W3; before coming to any decisions as to real
   installations or support.

To this end Access and Online Support plan to meet next
week to discuss the next step, the goals etc. Jonathan Streets
from Online Support will have some Summer Student help in
   continuing the evaluation within OLS.

I propose that we continue the evaluation through August.
At the end of that time we should produce an "evaluation report"
and if warranted, schedule a Computing Division Strategy meeting
   on the issue.

        Ruth
