What is EOT?

W3C develops specifications for font linking and embedding. Font linking, a.k.a. Web Fonts, adds downloadable fonts to documents & graphics (HTML, CSS, SVG…).

Embedding is a special form of linking that allows fonts to be subsetted (reduced in size) and allows Web documents to use commercial fonts. Embedding requires fonts in the EOT format.

2009-07-20 Philip Taylor has made a Perl library to subset TrueType fonts and optionally convert them to EOT.
2009-07-20 Ralf Herrmann maintains a site with information about Web fonts.
2009-07-20 Edward O’Connor describes how to use the command line program ttf2eot to create EOT files.
2009-01-27 Dutch Type Library and URW++ Design & Development offer a new graphical OpenType editor called DTL OTMaster. (Mac OS X, Linux, Windows. Free demo version.)

For technical discussion about the development of the EOT specification, please join the archived, public mailing list <www-font@w3.org>.

The EOT specification itself is written by the Fonts Working Group, according to its charter.

2008-10-04 Microsoft's WEFT analyzes HTML documents and creates EOT files that are optimized for those documents. (Windows; free)
2008-10-03 Apple's Safari browser version 3.1 supports EOT and Web Fonts. (Mac OS X and Windows; free)
2008-10-02 Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser versions 4 and later support EOT and Web Fonts. (Windows; free)
2008-10-01 YesLogic's Prince batch formatter for HTML & XML supports Web Fonts since version 6 (Linux, Mac OS X & Windows; free for personal use)
