Netscape Communications Corporation Statement of Interest in Signed XML

Netscape currently deploys products supporting PKI infrastructures for authentication, authorization, and privacy. We view Signed XML as a way to expand the users of PKI's, adding to the critical mass of users needed to support broad base deployment of PKI.

As such we are most interested in the Signed XML group accomplishing the following tasks:

  1. Identify the base level of functionality of Signed XML
  2. Determine the appropriate subset of existing standards, such as PKCS #7 and PKIX, needed to support Signed XML.
  3. Determine the area's where the existing standards are difficient and proposing appropriate changes to those standards.

There has been a lot of work invested in building public key infrastructures in the last several years, and the Signed XML group can decrease its deployment time by leveraging that work.
