<thetext>The menu example has a label element with "Go to", a label attribute of "Go", and the first option element contains, "Select site". The label attribute seems redundant. The label element doesn't have meaningful text, and the option element contains an item that would be more suitable as a label.

Maybe something like this could work?

Choose a value
...
...

The label would render as the displayed text of the select, and also provide its accessible name, but would not be selectable itself.</thetext>

Status: Rejected
Change Description: no spec change
Rationale: The label="" attribute is the only one that renders. The other two are only used in legacy UAs.</thetext>

<thetext>Per the proposal at http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-html-a11y/2010Jan/0245.html, the HTML A11Y TF does not plan to formally work on this issue at this time. This does not mean the TF has no interest in it, but does not have immediate plans to work on it. The TF may review the issue in the future.</thetext>
