    <thetext>If this terminology is confusing, wouldn&apos;t the note have to be in all the places that use the &quot;root element&quot; concept? Adding a note after the definition itself doesn&apos;t seem worthwhile given that it&apos;s already pretty clear.</thetext>

    <thetext>It seems we can replace usage of &quot;root element&quot; where it means self-or-root-of-self with &quot;root&quot; per https://dom.spec.whatwg.org/#concept-tree-root. That seems clearer than adding a note.</thetext>

    <thetext>Hmm, I guess if the node is in a document &quot;root element&quot; still refers to the document&apos;s first element child and not document itself? I guess properly fixing this requires indeed going through all usage of the term and checking what can be used instead which may be a bit trickier.</thetext>
