It's "defined" here: https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/obsolete.html#basefont Also note: "The blink, bgsound, isindex, multicol, nextid, rb, and spacer elements must use the HTMLUnknownElement interface." HTMLSpanElement seems bogus, but any of HTMLBaseFontElement, HTMLElement or HTMLUnknownElement seem reasonable.
