<thetext>I assume that the whitespace characters that are disregarded
when mode 'x' is specified are the same as XML 1.0 production [3] S.
It might be good to reference this rule explicitly. By the way,
XML spells it "white space" whereas you spell it "whitespace".</thetext>

<thetext>For the record, this comment is in the same area as bug 1922, though it's
actually a distinct comment.

Some of our specs, regrettably, have adopted the spelling "white space" as used
in the base XML spec. Personally, I strongly prefer "whitespace" because the
term does not mean "space that is white" (as contrasted with space that is red
or green).

<thetext>The WGs decided on 9/27 to add a sentence to the description of the 'x' flag
that says, in effect, that 'whitespace means the four characters x9, xA, xD and
x20'.</thetext>

<thetext>As XML 1.1 and XML 1.0 3e editor, I tried to weed the term "white space" out of
the specs, but the W3C wouldn't have it. Good luck.</thetext>
