    <thetext>I started a discussion on www-style[1] for supporting referencing of SVG paint servers by URL directly, without the need of element() which just supports references in the same document anyway.

SVG&apos;s &apos;fill&apos; and &apos;stroke&apos; properties do that. And it just seems natural to do the same on other properties that take &lt;image&gt; as value.
