But none of these really mean "width of the X area". Rather, they mean "width of the pieces of X", since that's what 8.3 is talking about all the way through (eg in the specification of what <length> values mean). It's most definitely /not/ talking about the actual X area width, which is a different thing entirely. Note that the first paragraph of 8.1 uses the term "pieces of margin". I'm not enamoured with this term, but we should employ this or some similar term to rewrite the quoted sentences above.
