17.5.2.1 (Fixed table layout) says:

  # If a subsequent row has more columns than the greater of the
  # number determined by the table-column elements and the number
  # determined by the first row, then additional columns may not
  # be rendered.

Firstly, it&apos;s unclear what &quot;subsequent&quot; refers back to; presumably it&apos;s the first row, but this wording should be clarified.

Secondly, the implication is that the number of columns for the table is typically the greater of the number defined by table-column elements and the number defined by table-cell elements in the first row, and optionally larger if new columns are later discovered... but this isn&apos;t actually explicit.  It should be made explicit.
