    <thetext>The whole point of a placeholder is that it&apos;s displayed by default.  The first &lt;option&gt; in a &lt;select&gt; is displayed by default, so it&apos;s the only one that makes sense to become a placeholder if you&apos;re attempting to optimize for backward compat.</thetext>
