The reason being that one of the most frustrating aspects of subtitles and media is that they are often split apart making it difficult for users to know how to bring them together. Users being media owners or simply viewers. DVD is one of very few formats that includes subtitles as a stream and this is excellent. the moov tracks in a quicktime media file also support text tracks and can be used in mp4 files as I already do. This means the file can be anywhere and the subtitles are available with the audio and video, why split them up when they can stay together ?
