Status: Rejected
Change Description: no spec change
Rationale: My knee-jerk reaction is that this wouldn't occur enough to make it worth it. It'd be easy to add to the spec if people think it'd be a good thing to add, though. I'm certainly open to adding it if there's a good argument for adding it.</thetext>

<thetext>The discussion that was behind this bug was:

# [21:44] <zcorpan_> Hixie: btw why can't </rt> be omitted?
# [21:46] <Hixie> in the syntax or in the parser?
# [21:47] <zcorpan_> both
# [21:47] <Hixie> didn't really think about it
# [21:48] <Hixie> just seemed simpler this way
# [21:48] <Hixie> i guess if people want we can make it optional
# [21:49] <zcorpan_> i saw subtitles with seemingly deliberatly omitting </i> by just looking at a handful
# [21:49] <zcorpan_> doesn't seem like a stretch that people are going to omit </rt> especially since it's optional in html
# [21:49] <Hixie> yeah seems reasonable
# [21:49] <Hixie> file a bug and i'll look into it
