Introduction

Steven McEachern is Director of the UK Data Service at the University of Essex. The University is involved in several projects looking to implement ODRL in conjunction with the DPV and DUO ontologies to manage access to research datasets at the UK Data Service and more broadly. Darren Bell is the Technical Director of the UK Data Service (UKDS)

Managing Access to Research Data

As part of this work, the UK Data Service (UKDS) technical director Darren Bell has been coordinating with Beatriz Esteves on elements of our ODRL implementation. A key implementation of this is in the Cross-Domain Interoperability Framework where we are recommending ODRL as the foundation standard for data access for research data across domains, and the forthcoming CDIF4EOSC Horizon Europe infrastructure project where UKDS will lead the Tools and Services Development work package.

We have also been working with Pierre-Antoine Champin in a new W3C-DDI Alliance working group on the alignment of the DDI standard with current W3C standards for documenting variables under the remit of the Data Exchange Working Group (I'm the Vice-Chair of the DDI Alliance).

We will be continuing this work at an upcoming Dagstuhl workshop in November for which Darren and I are co-chairs of the workshop, and Beatriz and Pierre-Antoine will be workshop participants.

Given the various overlaps in work programs and participants between our two groups, we were therefore keen to attend and participate in the Future of ODRL workshop, to contribute applied use cases to the work program, and establish potential implementations of current and future ODRL updates.
