With the goal of this workshop being "to outline a consensus for future deliverables and scope for the Web Cryptography Working Group charter or another Working Group charter and potentially list secure services to be developed on the Open Web Platform," this 'Trans-identical Proposal' is meant to open the door to possibilities for discussion of new notions surrounding identity and how people may express themselves across the web, either in proximity to or as part of the Open Web Platform. The following is proposed within the milieu of evolving discussions of identities in the decentralized sphere, such as those identities used in tandem with the use of decentralized virtual currencies, or in decentralized marketplaces, where pseudonyms, 'nyms,' and reputation processes are used and analyzed. This paper proposes a concept, to be called here 'Facets,' which departs from traditional notions of identity, and which conceptually deconstructs and decentralizes identity itself, within the concept of 'Facets.' This concept was initially presented on Github under an open issue in OpenBazaar . 1) Temporal or ephemeral 'facets' (here 'facets' are being proposed to be specially defined as follows:) 'Facets' are not necessarily 'components' of an identity, but may be utilized as such. A 'Facet' may express how one contemplates any number of permutations of possible 'others' that may or may not represent (within one's perception) any other entity. One may self-identify partially with one or more of these 'facets' without claiming them as an 'identity.' One may claim a 'facet' as a portion of an identity, whether online or in person. 2) Claims to anonymity or identity. Does an individual (whether in a "web of trust" or another decentralized model of reputation or identity), claim an 'identity,' or is an individual migrating away from traditional notions of individuality, within the context of anonymity, more closely represented by 'facets' in an anonymous context? In other words, does the individual exist in this context, in such a case where the 'facet' or 'facets' actually are functions of the ongoing deliberations of multiple entities? The individual may choose to be represented by a user-friendly mapping to a public key, which could be established as the person's identity. However, as this person establishes this identity, the concept or notion of 'facets' may enable the individual to be perceived within (or as) different aspects of a persona, and to the extent that the person chooses to present a 'facet' or 'facets' rather than a fully established persona which is the product of their expressed relationship and mapping to a public key, then the 'facets' will provide a measure of anonymity. As someone uses a 'facet' or 'facets' to a greater extent, rather than presenting themself online through a nym or pseudonym, the potential for anonymity increases. Furthermore, because any 'facet' can be developed and disseminated by an individual, and shared by an unlimited number of individuals, dissemination or broadcast of a 'facet' is complete, the notion of anonymity is not merely an individual concept, but is rather a collective one. The individual exists, but both the identity and 'facets' associated with the individual are increasingly decentralized as time goes on. 3) This 'Trans-identical Proposal' is submitted for your consideration and for review by those who have the responsibility of evaluating Position Papers being submitted for the W3C Workshop and Web Crypto Working Group.
