2012年12月17日 - World Wide Webコンソーシアム (W3C)は、本日、HTML5およびCanvas 2Dに関する仕様策定完了を発表いたしました。これらの仕様は、現段階ではW3C標準ではないものの、現在各企業やデベロッパーが実装やプランニングに向けて安定的なターゲットを持つことができる、機能的に完成した・機能策定完了段階にあります。HTML5は、W3Cが推進するOpenWeb Platformの根幹を担っており、ビデオやアニメーション、グラフィクス、スタイル、タイポグラフィ、およびデジタルパブリッシング向けのその他ツール、ネットワーク機能拡張など、デバイス機能へのアクセスを行うクロスプラットフォームアプリケーションに対応するフルプログラミング環境です。
「ステークホルダーは、ウェブテクノロジーの広まりにともない、さらに安定した標準を望むようになっています。」W3C CEOのJeff Jaffeは、こう述べています。「現今、企業は、今後HTML5によって何ができるか、そして、今後顧客がどのようなことを要望してくるのかがわかっています。同じように、デベロッパーも、スマートフォン、車、テレビ、電子書籍、電子署名、あるいは、未知のデバイスなどと連携するためには、どのようなスキルを育成すべきなのか理解しています。」
また、W3Cは、本日、標準化の次のラウンドを視野に入れたHTML 5.1およびCanvas 2D, Level 2の第一草案も発表いたしました。W3Cコミュニティは、既存のHTML機能に加え、ビルトインHTML5アクセシビリティ、レスポンシブイメージ、およびアダプティブストリーミングを補完するための拡張機能など、新たな機能の開発を継続して強化していきます。
最新技術の躍進と活気あるブラウザ市場は、飛躍的なイノベーションを生み出す源です。また、これらの多くは、HTML5および関連技術を幅広く採用しています。最近実施された4000人以上のデベロッパーに対するKendo UI調査によると、63%超が「HTML5を積極的に開発している」という旨を示しています。しかし、同調査では、「ブラウザフラグメンテーション」は、テクノロジーの使用によるコストと複雑性が増加するため、依然としてデベロッパーの懸念事項となっていることも示されています。
W3Cは、ブラウザフラグメンテーションを低減し、HTMLを活用および作成するあらゆるツールへと実装を拡張することを目指して、相互運用性およびテストへ専念するW3Cの「Candidate Recommendation(勧告候補)」に着手しました。
W3C HTML Working Groupでは、本段階において、この仕様がブラウザ間での相互互換性、オーサリングツール、電子メールクライアント、サーバー、コンテンツマネージメントシステム、その他Webツールなどを確実に実現できるよう、さまざまなアクティビティを実施する予定です。HTML WGでは、現在のHTML5の実装を分析し、テスト開発の優先順位を定め、コミュニティと連携してこれらのテストに取り組みます。HTML WGでは、2014年中旬にこの実装フェーズを終了する計画であり、最終的なHTML5勧告の公開後には、W3CのPatent Policyに基づき、ロイヤリティフリーとして公開する予定です。
HTML WGだけが、HTML5およびOpen Web Platformの成功を追求しているわけではありません。たとえば、Web Performance Working Groupは、現在、パフォーマンスメトリクスへのアクセスを可能にする2つのW3C勧告を公開しており、Webアプリケーションパフォーマンスを評価および拡張するための技術を開発しています。最近では、November Workshop(2012年11月のワークショップ)でその技術を公表しています。Web and TV Interest Group(IG)およびCore Mobile Web Community Group(CG)は、増加する各種デバイスの展開を促進する手段として、テスト実施の優先順位を引き上げました。

ACCESS is pleased to see this HTML5 Candidate Recommendation. We think HTML5 is useful as a single approach to connect servers and all client devices.
These are not only for Cloud, PC and Smart Phone but also for Embedded Devices without any plugins. We implemented HTML5 technologies to various embedded devices, and started a lot of services by it. Furthermore, there will be many enhanced technologies defined in WGs, these will be equipped on them, too, to realize leading-edge services. ACCESS commits to continue to support W3C activities and to contribute to the industry by Web Technologies.

Accessibility Foundation is excited about the complete definition of HTML5 and Canvas 2D specifications.
