===================== SMK's position paper ===================== SMK Position Paper for the W3C Web and Automotive Workshop Dear Workshop Chairs, I am sending this position paper to express our interest in participating in the W3C Web and Automotive Workshop. -------------------------------------------------------- Name, organization and contact details ------------------------------------------------------- The following person would like to join the workshop. Haruhiko Kondo Strategic Planning Dept. SMK Corporation --------------------------------------- Participants' interest in the workshop --------------------------------------- We are a manufacturer of connectors, switches and sensor devices related to user interfaces, e.g., touch panels, remote-control devices, camera devices, and switches, and provide those "small devices" to "consumer device vendors" so that they can generate so-called CE devices including cars. As you might know, each CE vendor uses their own proprietary specification and design, so the ways of communication among the small unit devices within a system are different from each other and there has been much difficulty to integrate systems. So we really need a standardized and simplified way of the communication between devices for user interfaces. And we think Web technology is one of the most promising candidates for that purpose. That's why we are very interested in participating in this workshop. -------------------- View point -------------------- - We are a manufacturer of connectors, switches and sensor devices, and we think those "small units" are also constituents of user interfaces. So we believe Web technology should be applied to those devices as well as usual GUI (display, keyboard and mouse) and mobiles. - We think any kind of user interface devices including remote-control devices, touch panels, smartphones and camera devices will be able to be connected using the Web standards. - Standardizing and simplifying interfaces between devices would reduce costs for developing applications and improve usability and accessibility. - Also there is a possibility we could integrate various independent systems using standardized interfaces. For example, cars and CE devices would be connected with each other using Web technology SMK web and Automotive Workshop (2012). ------------------------------------------------------ Concrete examples of our suggestions ------------------------------------------------------- Unfortunately, there are no concrete products we can show at this moment, because our ideas are still under research. However, we think the following should be included as examples. A simple example: ----------------- Standardize key events and properties for in-car devices, e.g., car audio systems and car navigation systems, like the standardized DOM events for TV remotes. An advanced example: -------------------- Both my intelligent car and my intelligent house collaborate with each other and double check if it is really safe in the garage when I come home and put my car into the garage. Sincerely, Haruhiko Kondo, SMK Corporatio
