Image maps support in mobile web browsers
Image Maps support in web browsers running in a mobile device show quite different behaviours:
- Some only display the image without any chance of user interaction.
- Some display the image and treat areas of the map as "normal" hyperlinks.
- Some display the image and then a list of hyperlinks extracted from href attributes from area elements in the map.
- Some do not display the image but display a list of hyperlinks extracted from href attributes from area elements in the map.
In general, image maps should be avoided for universal web browser support (using instead lists of hyperlinks, for example).
If web browsers' capabilities are known, image maps can be served when browser is known to render them in a desired way, among the ones listed above.
Take into account that image maps are not supported in Mobile Web Best Practices 1.0 Basic Guidelines' Default Delivery Context (as it is not supported by XHTML 1.0 Basic).
@@@ Nacho: thinking of adding some screenshots to examplify (avoiding brands and models and showing only browsers' web content display area).
