ISSUE-69: Minimization and White Space

Minimization and White Space

State:
CLOSED
Product:
Best Practices Document
Raised by:
Jo Rabin
Opened on:
2005-11-21
Description:
ISSUE-45 raised this issue and it was closed at the meeting of 3 Nov with an
action on me, which was not recroded as such, to supply text making it clear
that we mean don\'t send pretty printed markup to the device and if you can, then
strip white space on the way out of the server.

Proposed Resolution

Change the first para of 5.5.10.2

Current Text

5.5.10.2 How to do it

Use of markup formatting programs which aim to make content more readable by
humans, contributes considerably to page weight and should not be used to format
content for delivery to mobile devices; instead strip all possible redundant
white space.

Proposed text

5.5.10.2 How to do it

\"Pretty Printing\", i.e. the formatting of mark-up with programs such as HTML
Tidy, with indent option set to \"yes\", can generate large amounts of white space
and hence page weight.

If \"pretty printing\" is an important part of the authoring process then try to
arrange that redundant white space is stripped when serving a page. If this is
not possible, it may be desirable to keep white space during the production
process and to collapse it when making pages live.

Even though some network proxies strip white space that they think is redundant,
not all do so, so it is not best practice to rely upon this behavior. There are
other issues relating to network proxies (such as requesting them not to strip
relevant white space) which will be addressed in a later phase.
