This is a higher-level (squirrel) review of an analysis for videos on WCAG 2 requirements.
Please get acquainted with the following resources for this review:
In this survey each WCAG 2 Guideline and Success Criterion is listed, with a proposed scenario for a brief video to visualize the requirement and explain it in simple terms. The videos will potentially be embedded in Understanding WCAG 2, Accessibility Principles, and What's New in WCAG 2.1 to make them less text-heavy. The videos will likely also be used in different training settings.
Note that the final videos will include other aspects of diversity, such as gender, age, ethnicity, and disability nature (congenital, progressive, injury, age-related, etc.).
You are invited to review the following:
Note that this list of requirements includes proposals in the latest Editor Draft of WCAG 2.2 of 21 July. These may change or get entirely dropped, and new ones may be added in the coming weeks.
Please do not take time to review wording, grammar, and typos. This is an early requirements analysis to establish an understanding of which videos we will be developing as part of this deliverable. Reminder that you can fill in some of this survey now, "Submit your answers" button at the bottom, and come back and do more later.

Shawn Lawton Henry | Overall, I think there are a few SCs that would benefit from a video and many SCs that would not. Videos add complexity to a page. So I think we should only add videos in places where they will really help people understand the problem that the SC is addressing &/or the solution that it provides. Rather than do videos for all or most of the SCs, I think our time and resources would be better spent on: * other videos (e.g., for How People with Disabilities Use the Web) * persona quotes for the SCs that don’t have them * a static illustration for the top of some of the SCs (e.g., like some of the examples in the Tips pages <https://www.w3.org/WAI/tips/>) In a few cases, we might consider a video to help understand the importance for people with disabilities – yet I think we should do that sparingly at the SC level. We could decide that some SCs don’t need a specific video for that SC, yet in the Understanding doc, we want to point to one (or more) of the new How People with Disabilities Use the Web videos that has content that helps appreciate the importance of that SC. I think we probably also want to add pointers in some Understanding docs to specific Perspectives Videos. [Note to Hidde to add pointers to other videos to the redesign drafts? :-] These videos seem to be only the "works well". I feel strongly that for some of the SCs, also including a video of when it does *not* work would be much more powerful and significantly help understand the point. Important: I didn't think through all of below carefully. So, I might change my opinion on specific ones when I do. And I am very open to other ideas! :-) (I commented on almost all of the SCs, and not the Guidelines. Note: I put comments in several SC questions that I did *not* check an option.) About the guidelines videos: I'm on the fence. I thought it might be a good idea... yet, the guideline text seems so simple and clear, that it doesn't feel like videos are needed? In any case, I don't much like the descriptions as they are now -- which is compliation of SC videos that I mostly found unhelpful. It might be a useful exercise to look at the Principles page by itself and think about if videos would be useful there, and what they might be like? Overall, I'm thinking that most of what EOWG participants liked about the idea of videos will be met with the videos for How People with Disabilities Use the Web, and so most of these Guidelines and SC videos won't be needed in addition to those. |

Kevin White | This is a really challenging questionnaire. Not just because of the length but because it is lumping together Guideline videos with Success Criteria videos. I have I think there is also a bit of a challenge in that it is often easier to illustrate the SC by presenting the problem rather than the well designed solution. These seem to focus on the solution. This might just be my misunderstanding the vision for each video though. Another challenge is whether the videos are meant to explain and illustrate the need for the SC or explain the SC in a more digestible way. In the case of the former, then all the videos are required. I have provided answers based on the latter though. I haven't responded to the guideline videos as I think those would be better explored once SC videos are broadly agreed upon. |
Daniel Montalvo | |
Sharron Rush | I can't comment on many of the videos specifically since I seldom watch/use them. But I know that most people do and I think it is a good idea for that reason and to clarify some concepts. I am very much in favor of illustrating multiple SCs with only one video. Otherwise I trust the judgement of the group, especially those who rely on videos for processing information. Thanks for all this good thinking and the hard work of producing clear concept videos. |
Vicki Menezes Miller | Apologies but due to lack of time, I have not devoted as much time as I would have liked to. |

It is not clear for me if the video shows good examples or what this implies when text alternative is too verbose or incorrect. If the goal is to show good practice, may be it could be interesting to show alternative to a complex image and not talking about logos. Or, if you want to talk about logos, not displaying as laternative "w3C logo" but simply "W3C, World Wide Web Consrotium". |
Estella Oncins |

Maybe also include the difference between simple and complex images. Some images have an intended purpose which is not explained in the alt text. |

A suggestion: Nowadays, people try to add alt text but in an over enthusiastic way and to the greatest description for any image, including decorative images. If possible, introduce an example in which poorly entered alt text is given. |

The distinction between the various aspects of 1.2.X SCs I think is important. It is easy to get lost in the variations of live/prerecorded, audio description, media alternative, sign language etc. I think the overview video should seek to explain that rather than the specific SCs. |

Color blindness is related to vision of colour, but not contrasts between foreground and background, so I don't understand the purpose of showing someone with color blindness in this video. Perhaps give clearer explanations about what this means. |

Not clear how the narrative of the videos can be to address the different personas and still make the SC clear to the audience. Specially for 1.4.2 (Audio control) which is a different channel than text (visual) |

Many people don't know or understand what this is, so video example would be useful. You don't really have to have a person, though. Could just have a simple video clip with description. " Person with tunnel vision is provided with audio descriptions for a movie " How would you show that they have tunnel vision? I guess you'd have to simulate what they see? Maybe not worth that? |

Borderline on this one. I think there is probably a need to explain this SC more but there is a lot within it. Using form labels as the example runs the risk of that being the focus. It might be that more is required in the video to illustrate the different impact that programmatic structure has on use. |

Yes, this one lends itself to video showing reading order by screen reader. I wonder about showing a good and bad example? Shawn Lawton Henry | " Person with low vision using re-flowed content due to text-resizing understands which button to press (button was beside and is now below the instruction/text) " I guess to really illustrate the wording of the SC, you'd need to have instructions that say something like: "the button after" and opposed to "the button to the right of". I do not think this needs a video. Instead, could have examples that illustrate -- preferably good & bad.

" Person with color blindness is able to read the text because there is sufficient contrast between foreground and background " seems lame. Maybe a good video would be demonstrating how a page is "seen" by a person with "normal" contrast sensitivity, and then that same page by a person with low contrast sensitivity -- and showing low-contrast text being invisible for the second user -- then a good version where it is still visible. |

I think good to have video that shows how a page changes as the text size is increased. And I think this is one (of several) where it would be good to show a bad version (where text and buttons get cut off or overlapping) and a good version. separate videos: video for 1.4.4 should show content disappearing; video for 1.4.10 should focus on horizontal scrolling |

"Person with low vision using screen magnification can comfortably read fancy-styled headings because they are not an images " again, I think show a good and bad. I think it would be more clear and powerful to show a user increasing text size, and show that some of the text increases and some does not ('cause it's image) -- and then how a good where it all does. |

I think a video would greatly help in understanding this! I don't think this is sufficient to illustrate the problem "Person with low vision using screen magnification is not disturbed by pop-up boxes appearing and disappearing on focus and hover" I think need to more clearly illustrate these persona quotes: https://www.w3.org/WAI/standards-guidelines/wcag/new-in-21/#1413-content-on-hover-or-focus-aa (I think some folks in LVTF can give you specific examples where it happens in live websites now) |

Shawn Lawton Henry | " Person with anxiety can set application to "do not disturb" mode, to avoid unnecessary notifications " I know that we're wanting to have diversity and not too heavy on screen reader. However, I think this is a much stronger example: It also allows users who are blind or have low vision to keep their "viewing" focus on the content they are currently reading. -- that is, showing focus being pulled away, and then the user struggling to find their place again.

I am not sure that the example describes motion animation. There is a change as a result of motion on the part of the user but not sure that is the same thing. Something like clicking a button and screen elements spiralling away to be replaced by other elements maybe, or presentation changes with animation actions attached. |

Video not helpful for understanding. (and if do video, "Person with language disability can understand the text more easily because it is written to avoid difficult words, abbreviations, and complex sentence structures " does not address the SC "A mechanism is available for identifying specific definitions of words or phrases used in an unusual or restricted way, including idioms and jargon. " ) |
Mark Palmer | ||
Kevin White |
|
The example suggests rewriting to remove the unusual works but the SC indicates that a mechanism to explain those words is what is needed. Think there needs something to show a glossary, pop-up definitions, help icon or some such to explain complex words that have to be there. |

I think this is distinct from 3.2.1 and needs to use an example that is distinct. Unless the idea is to include, for example, tabbing to an element followed by nasty change then submitting a form followed by another nasty change. |

I think the SC is quite clear. If there is a perceived need for this then I would suggest a different form for the video as buttons being in the same place may be difficult to make 'real' enough. |

Not clear how it relates to 3.2.1 and to physical https://w3c.github.io/wcag/understanding/change-on-request.html Individuals who are unable to detect changes of context or may not realize that the context has changed are less likely to become disoriented while navigating a site Some individuals with low vision, with reading and intellectual disabilities, and who have difficulty interpreting visual cues may benefit from additional cues in order to detect changes of context. People with certain cognitive limitations do not get confused if automatic redirects are performed by the Web server instead of the browser. |

I think 3.2.1 explains the problem and solution, this explores including a user option to switch the whole thing off. Not sure whether that would add much to the 3.2.1 video and not sure how much additional help it provides by including as a separate video. |

Estella Oncins | Great work to illustrate SC with actual user needs. From my point of views some SC criteria could be grouped by level and type of need cognitive/visual/physical. This would help to better illustrate the interaction of the users with the web. Use cases for videos related to SC for audio descriptions and captions need to be reviewed, specially regarding prerecorded and live concepts, which really differ in terms of professional work and output for the users. Maybe some examples could also be illustrated with users that do not present any type of (dis)ability but struggle with the web. |
