Only one question - there was a proposal for the language choice to be presented as a dropdown. I understand why that may not be feasible but wonder if there is concern that as the number of languages increases, will the list at the top become untenable? |

- I like the blue box separators more than any other suggested separator on the analysis page. - I still have a small worry that the "skip to content link will be lost if is is aligned *with* the languages. I am not sure what is a better solution. Having on the left would seem awkward. Happy to leave this up to the editors/designers. - Is the change log going to be automated in some way. I cannot imagine us being able to keep up with all the changes while we wait on all of the translations being updated. What is the plan for managing all of the translation changes when a resources changes? This process is not exactly clear in the Updates to English Version section, but I do understand that this is still being drafted/determined. |

EOWG proposes to expand the WAI Style Guide on disability language. Previously we always used "people first language". The proposal is to prefer people first language in most cases, and to allow language such as "blind students" in some cases, at the discretion of the document owners (e.g., often EOWG). We will also be providing additional guidance on terminology in other languages for translators.
If you find perspectives on disability language that are authoritative (e.g., officially from a disability organizations), particularly well justified, etc. — from the last few years — please list them in the field below with:
[preferred language] - [date of publication or update] - [organization &/or individual] - [summary of perspective]
Thanks!

Sharron Rush | - [blind person][2009 reprint of 1993 resolution] [National Federation of the Blind] Opposed people first language as "pretentious euphemisms that characterize almost everything we do and say. Euphemisms and the politically correct language which they exemplify are sometimes only prissy, sometimes ridiculous, and sometimes tiresome. Often, however, they are more than that. At their worst they obscure clear thinking and damage the very people and causes they claim to benefit. - [ID first] [8 Oct 2018] [Wikipedia reporting on NFB, deaf culture, and Autism activist Jim Sinclair] Opposed to people first language. "the awkwardness ... focuses on the disability in a new and potentially negative way" and "we understand autism as an inherent part of an individual’s identity..." etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People-first_language#Criticism - [People first] The same Wikipedia article notes that "Other advocacy groups and organizations such as Autism Speaks,The Arc and Disability Is Natural support using people-first language." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People-first_language#Criticism - [ID first] [May 2010] [The Continuing Saga of People-First Language by Larry E. Streeter for NFB] Strongly opposed and includes his informal surveys of blind friends and colleagues about their own preference. https://nfb.org/images/nfb/publications/bm/bm10/bm1005/bm100509.htm More opposition to absolutism in the use of people first language: https://thebodyisnotanapology.com/magazine/the-problem-with-person-first-language/ https://nfb.org/images/nfb/publications/bm/bm09/bm0903/bm090309.htm https://www.thinkinclusive.us/why-person-first-language-doesnt-always-put-the-person-first/ https://theblog.adobe.com/liz-jackson-accessibility-inclusive-design/

Brent Bakken | Deaf people do not like to be referred to as People with hearing impairment. They want to be a part of a community of people with the same condition and many time prefer "Deaf people" or "Deaf person" with a capital "D" to indicate that they are part of a community. I have heard this many times by my colleague/team member in Pearson whom I work with. She is deaf and although is very forgiving of whatever language is used, has made it clear to our team that someone who is deaf prefers to be called a Deaf person, not a person who is deaf. Some documentation - http://theaslapp.com/faq/ from The ASL App website.

Shawn Lawton Henry | Added outreach ideas to <https://www.w3.org/WAI/EO/wiki/EOWG_Outreach#Misc_Notes>: * Encourage conference organizers to send this link to all their presenters: https://www.w3.org/WAI/teach-advocate/accessible-presentations/ Hopefully some "thought-leaders" will follow the link, look around and find other useful info on the site, and spread the word about WAI resources. * For articles, blogs, tweets, etc. that cover topics related to WAI resources yet don't mention the WAI resource, add it to the comments &/or otherwise encourage the author to add it Updated Business Case tweet data at https://www.w3.org/WAI/EO/wiki/Promoting_Business_Case#Record_of_outreach_and_mentions |
