Demonstrate Semantic Web technology in tools for transforming content and presenting it in the manner most suitable for users with disabilities
Making online content and services available to people with disabilities is a major concern in Europe and many other parts of the world. This Work Package will build on Semantic Web development to bring new technology to mainstream tools, in order to support accessibility on the Web. It is expected that many of the tools developed will also be useful for the broader requirements of developers working in the area of mobile access to Web technology.
This work may be informed by early results from Work Package 9, but does not rely on that work, as there is existing work on the kind of transformations required.
The workpackage will provide a library of transformations as RDF-described Web Services, that can be used to convert content from different formats. This will build on existing techniques developed by companies such as Adaptive Media (Norway) and Reef (France) and work done at INRIA and CWI, including similar approaches used in developing content for Mobile technology.
Building on existing work done at INRIA and CWI, the workpackage will demonstrate the use of Semantic Web technology to combine presentations with third-party metadata about them to provide more accessible versions.
The work undertaken in this workpackage (and WP9) is intended to support the work of W3C's Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) through describing the connections between Semantic Web and WAI technology and goals. Mechanisms will be established for coordinating the SWAD-Europe work with the wider WAI effort, through the SWAD-Europe Advisory Group, and through connections to relevant W3C coordination, working and interest groups. It is possible that revisions to the planned deliverables may be proposed, based on the needs and priorities of W3C work in this area.
