Minutes

Attendees: Egon, Anja, Bosse, Elgar, Jun, Kei, Matthias, Scott

  • egonw is making notes

<egonw> start: open data follow up

<egonw> summary of past meeting: various licenses

<egonw> take home message: recommended: if licensing is not 100% clear, email to upstream copyright owner about details

<egonw> making data available raises awareness with both data provider and users

<egonw> current efforts seem OK, but we could still contact upstream data providers

<egonw> CC is available for general questions

<egonw> question 1: should we contact data providers?

<egonw> susie: contacting data providers is probably good

<egonw> anja: licenses also important for users

<egonw> question: commercial use? two interpretations...

<egonw> 1. for commercial redistribution; 2. for commercial services

<egonw> susie: should stay in touch with data providers about what we want to do, and if they are happy about that, and how that is reflected in the license

<egonw> susie: wonders about to what extend we can relicense and/or sublicense

<jun> bosse: shall we go back and influence the data providers to be more open with their data?

<egonw> susie: when we contact data providers we can talk about licensing issues when integrating data and making it open

<egonw> susie: where from now?

<egonw> good idea to talk to data providers

<egonw> what about data sources already available?

<egonw> like drugbank, since already being published about

<egonw> done deal?

<egonw> anja?: talk to bio2rdf, as they do redistribution a lot too

<egonw> michel dumontier is involved in bio2rdf (since when?)

<egonw> bio2rdf is more oriented in bioinformatics

<egonw> our work more on drugs

<egonw> (that was susie)

<egonw> bosse?: also for older data set contact providers

<egonw> if we do not have any license right now, then we should at least say the original license applies

  • egonw will contact Peter Ansell about Bio2RDF data licenses

<egonw> for current data sets, licenses are listed on the wiki page

  • egonw will also ask Peter about how to have contact with the data providers

<egonw> susie wants to be careful not to frighten data providers

<egonw> who is going to look at which data sets?

<egonw> anja: suggest who people who converted data into RDF should look into that...

<egonw> susie will ping Oktie

<egonw> kei will look at TCM

<egonw> jun: original licenses should be linked to too

<egonw> how about the patient data license? can we make a suggestion there based on the previous conference call?

<egonw> comment: data providers might not want to have their data linked

<egonw> suggested to start with just querying a single database

<egonw> carefully approaching data providers is said to be good practice

<egonw> II: Data Update

<egonw> http://chem-bla-ics.blogspot.com/2009/11/swat4ls-linking-open-drug-data-to.html

<egonw> slide 17

<egonw> linking TCM to STITCH

<egonw> susie: is there a linked version of biopax?

<egonw> can biopax ontology be used for, for example, stitch

<egonw> BioPAX ontology license is LGPL

<egonw> matthias: one problem seems to be the lack of conformation to the linked data concepts

<egonw> matthias: another issue is the imprecise semantics in the ontology here and there

<egonw> III: ESWC paper update

<bbalsa> Link to Linked Life Data information, http://www.linkedlifedata.com/

<egonw> matthias: focusing in ESWC abstract + main text

<egonw> focus on traditional medicine

<egonw> outline is in Google Docs

<egonw> discusses ontology view/browse widget

<egonw> people interested co-authoring on paper later next year should email Matthias to be added as a co-author

<egonw> next call: 6th january

<egonw> matthias: december 22 is deadline

<egonw> bio-ontology moved to next call

<egonw> tcm special issue likewise

<egonw> happy holidays to all
