BIRDS OF A FEATHER ON SEMANTIC WEB FOR HEALTH CARE AND LIFE SCIENCES

November 14, 2007

In Conjunction with

THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL SEMANTIC WEB CONFERENCE (ISWC) 2007

Busan, Korea

November 11-15, 2007

Health care and life sciences practitioners need to be able to access all relevant data in order to make well-informed decisions. In order for this to be achieved, data about drugs, patients, diseases, genes, proteins, and pathways must be effectively integrated. This integration consumes large amounts of resources and remains an obstacle to efficient operation.

Many organizations are now exploring the use of the Semantic Web in the hope of easing the effort of data integration. The benefits promised by the Semantic Web include aggregation of heterogeneous data using explicit semantics, simplified annotation and sharing of findings, the expression of rich and well-defined models for data aggregation and search, easier reuse of data in unanticipated ways, and the application of logic to infer additional insights.

W3C has established the Health Care and Life Sciences (HCLS) Interest Group to help organizations in their adoption of the Semantic Web. HCLS is chartered to develop and support the use of Semantic Web technologies to improve collaboration, research and development, and innovation adoption in the of Health Care and Life Science domains. As a part of its ongoing outreach efforts, we are organizing a birds of a feather (BOF) on the Semantic Web for Healthcare and Life Sciences in conjunction with ISWC 2007.
