Submission request to W3C

We, W3C member Microsoft hereby submit to the Consortium the following specification comprising the document(s) linked below:

  1. Dynamic HTML Overview [W3C Members Only]
  2. Structured Document Event Model [W3C Members Only]
  3. Structured Document Navigation Model [W3C Members Only]
  4. Cascading Style Sheets Object Model [W3C Members Only]

which collectively are referred to as "the submission". We request the submission be known as the Dynamic HTML submission.

Abstract

Dynamic HTML is an API for accessing and manipulating an HTML document. This object model allows web developers to create truly interactive, live content. The Dynamic HTML object model allows the developer to manipulate the entire HTML document without requiring any round-trips to the server, nor without requiring the developer to ever refresh the page. This allows developers to move beyond the traditional static HTML page into the world of dynamically changing documents.

Intellectual Property Rights

Microsoft agrees to grant, and does grant to W3C, a nonexclusive, royalty-free license under any copyrights in this contribution to reproduce, distribute, display publicly and prepare derivative works that are based on or incorporate all or part of the contribution and to authorize others to do so. Specification

The submission may distributed within the membership internally and publically outside of the W3C without fee.

Suggested action

We suggest that the Consortium establish a separate working group for collaborating on the specification of an API for manipulating the HTML document. The goal of such group is to make a formal recommendation for an API. We also request that these documents be made publicly available immediately.

Resources

To help with this work, we expect to be able to provide resources to contribute to a working group and to author drafts.

Change control

We expect to produce more detailed documentation in the near future. This documentation is a resubmission of existing documents to fulfill 'process' requirements. 2 new documents were included in this submission to help provide more details on the API and its objectives to the W3C.
