In order to support Japanese subtitle and caption requirements, it is necessary to support emphasis marks 圏点 'ken-ten', also known as side marks 傍点 'bou-ten'. While this could be done (awkwardly) by using Ruby annotations for each mark, it is much better to define a textEmphasis style property based the text-emphasis property defined by CSS Text Decorations Level 3 [1].
