It's possible to do the RIF-in-RDF mapping with our without using rdf:type arcs and corresponding RDF/OWL classes.

Using classes means using more triples, but may make the RDF version easier to understand.

One complication of using classes: if RDFS/OWL reasoning is done, there may be additional rdf:type arcs inferred. In the presence of incomplete reasoning, with rule-transformation rules, this might result in simply having different (but also correct) rdf:type arcs from the expected/original ones.
