[Powerbox] New draft based on further collaboration and prototyping

With the help of Sony Ericsson and Mozilla Labs, we have updated the
Powerbox proposal to address a wider array of use-cases and
implementation environments. This new draft reflects feedback we
received on the initial proposal, discussions with potential
implementers and application developers and prototyping work on Chrome
and Android.

The new draft is in the zip file (HTML + PNG) attached to this email .

We believe the Powerbox provides a general purpose solution to the
resource discovery and user consent problems that must be solved when
giving Web content access to a user's private resources. A Powerbox
introduction is therefore a good way to bootstrap the local device
interactions that this WG is working on. The Examples section of the
Powerbox spec shows how some of these scenarios could work, but leaves
more involved interaction patterns, such as a full Calendar access, to
the future (and current) work of this WG. The Powerbox shows how to
initiate such interactions.

An initial Powerbox prototype can be found at:

The purpose of this prototype is to demonstrate (as closely as is
feasible) what a potential Powerbox user interface could look like,
and examine the implementation requirements. An implementation that is
more closely coupled to the browser could have a better UI. The
current prototype uses an older version of the Powerbox spec, but is
very similar and will be updated shortly.

The current version of the Powerbox spec is ready for wider
prototyping work and we look forward to collaboration and feedback
from this WG. We would like to see the Powerbox become a W3C
Recommendation from this WG.
