what I meant is that the def. should not make it optional.

wasGeneratedBy([],e) seems uninformative.

The argument that you could have a timestamp brings us back to the F2F discussion on separating "at" from "by" everywhere:

wasGeneratedAt(), wasGeneratedB(),
wasStartedAt(), wasStartedBy()
...
