What I'm looking for is a combination of specs (HTML5 + extensions) 
under which documents using this do not become non-conforming.

As with other less-frequently used features of HTML4, I'm open to 
deprecating/replacing them, but if we do so there should be a transition 
period allowing migration to something else.

(This is related to Shelley's new issue "obsconf" (106), and the general 
discussion about conformance criteria.
