Agreed.
I keep repeating it two things are needed:

1. Parsing algorithm and error recovery for consistent handling is
cool. [browsers]
2. One recommended syntax and set of elements [authors]

This has multiple benefits:

* encourage common practices without blocking rendering
* encourage quality in expression and design (XHTML syntax woke up
people with regards the Semantics)
* encourage a common normalization of documents

Since the launch of the HTML WG, I did a lot to advocate and to build
bridges between authors/web designers community with browsers
implementers explaining why it was necessary to be *able to read the
Web*. Web designers made the effort to understand and accept. I would
hope that Browsers Implementers make the same step towards the Web
designers.

That would be at least a good gesture towards the Web design
community, at best that would be a way to move forward faster.
