To complement the answer from Tobias, I will point you towards the PLUS 
Coalition (Picture Licensing Universal System), http://www.useplus.com/ 
that has developed machine-readable license data for photos. I know that 
more and more news and photos stock agencies use this system. There are 
also application that produce and consume PLUS data (copyrights licenses 
available in RDF format and in human-readable format for the lawyers 'à 
la' creative commons) and directly generate invoices.
The MMSEM XG has established a formal liaison with this group and some 
past members were also in the board of the PLUS group.
