AsideHeaderFooterDoubts
From HTML WG Wiki
Draft:
State: NEW ISSUE
The usefulness of the aside, header, and footer elements is questioned (mailing list discussion). Main concern is too much closeness to their presentation and thus their semantics.
Example by Andrew Fedoniouk:
footer { position: fixed; top:0; } Is it still footer or is it header now?
Research
Apparently, the elements in questions (at least "header" and "footer") have their origin in Ian's 2005 Web Authoring Stats; concerns, however, are rather based on "heuristics".
Proposals
- Remove or
- "rename" the elements in question to focus more on semantics.
Name suggestions
These suggestions are currently only name related. Different meanings have yet to be decided.
- "aside": "auxiliary", "aux", "supplement", or "note".
- "header": "identity" or "banner".
- "footer" "about" or "masthead".
