Identification of animals

From Livestock Data Interchange Standards Community Group
Jump to: navigation, search

One of the key interest areas for a number of participants was developing a unique identification for livestock animals. Obviously the current ISO11784 standard for animal identification using low frequency RFID is a good start, but it is not a complete solution where a visual form of identification is being used, or animal information must be displayed and read on reports, or where historical animals have been recorded before RFID tags were widely available.

Michael McEwen has provided me with links to some of the NZ NAIT (National Identification and Tracing) fact sheets that provide information about RFID and visual tags supported by NAIT. See the NAIT User Guides and Fact Sheets, particularly noting the section on Tagging.

You should also familiarise yourself with the ICAR Recording Guidelines, (especially sections 1 and 15) which document the International Committee for Animal Recording rules.
