New versions of documents on structured data in HTML5

The HTML5 Working Group has recently published ten documents,  updating a number of HTML5 related Working Drafts. From the Semantic Web perspective, two documents are of a particular interest:

  1. A new version of the “HTML+RDFa 1.1” specification. This version, developed by the RDF Web Applications Working Group, aligns RDFa 1.1 in HTML5 with the core RDFa 1.1 specification (currently in Candidate Recommendation phase). Note that the  RDFa 1.1 test harness includes HTML5+RDFa 1.1 tests, too, with a number of implementations already passing all the tests.
  2. A new version of the “HTML Microdata” specification. The important point to notice, again from the Semantic Web perspective, is the removal of the microdata→RDF algorithm (which appeared in earlier drafts but which has been rescinded since) in favor of the separate “Microdata to RDF” document that has been published recently, and which defines an updated and more RDF-friendly version of the mapping algorithm.

Those interested in structured data in HTML may also be interested in the “HTML Data Guide” document, that details and compares the various approaches, or the “RDFa Lite 1.1 specification,” that provides a minimal, entry level subset of RDFa.
