MWI session at WWW 2007 — 9 May 2007

So I'm at the WWW 2007 conference in beautiful (truly) Banff, Canada. This morning I chaired a multi-speaker/pantel session titled Making Mobile Browsing Better (as part of the W3C Track at the conference). The speakers/panelists were: Art Barstow (Nokia), Charles McCathieNevile (Opera Software), Rhys Lewis (Volantis), Shadi Abou-Zahra (W3C), Dan Appelquist (Vodafone), and me (sorta) -- with a cameo appearance from James Pearce (dotmobi mTLD), who put together a presentation on less than 10 minutes' notice (thanks James). I started out the session by saying that our collective mission was to "make mobile browsing suck less", which got a burst of applause from the audience. I guess we had about 130 or so people in the room. Had to rush the speakers a bit because we didn't have too much time, but I think the audience took away some good info about what we've managed to get done in the Mobile Web Initiative thus far and what we're working on going forward, so I count it as a success.

W3C Mobile Web hits the road! — 29 April 2007

Look out for the intensive Mobile Web Initiative promotion in May 07, starting with the MWI session at the W3C Track of the WWW07 conference in Banff, Canada. MWI sponsors will share their enthusiasm for the current and future work in W3C mobile Web standards land. We will report later on how the session went. And if you're on site, do not hesitate to ask for a copy of the "gorgeous" MWBP flipcards! Next month will also see MWI widely promoted in Africa: IST-Africa 2007 (Maputo, Mozambique), W3C South Africa Office opening event (in Pretoria) and GSM>3G East & Central Africa (Kenya). The talks will focus on how and why the mobile Web is seen as a solution for bridging the digital divide. Learn more with this white paper. We will be back to South Africa end of November, for GSM>3G Africa, with expected new developments. In the meantime, if you are interested in the subject and if you are either experts in Web technologies or in developing countries and on the digital divide, please contact us! All the above shows, if not obvious yet, that W3C hits the road with numerous and diverse MWI marketing and outreach activities. So get involved and benefit from many more! And thanks again for the o-tanjoobi omedetoo messages today...
