The Internationalization Core Working Group has published an updated Working Draft of Best Practices for Authoring HTML: Handling Right-to-left Scripts.

This document provides advice for the use of HTML markup and CSS style sheets to create pages containing languages that use right-to-left scripts, such as Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Thaana, Urdu, etc.

The Working Group believes this document is complete and does not anticipate any substantive changes. This draft is provided as a last chance for review and feedback before publication as a Working Group Note.

The Internationalization Core Working Group has published a Working Draft of Web Services Internationalization (WS-I18N). This document describes enhancements to SOAP messaging to provide internationalized and localized operations using locale and international preferences. These mechanisms can be used to accommodate a wide variety of development models for international usage.

First Public Working Draft: Requirements of Japanese Text Layout

Read the Working Draft
Participants from four W3C Groups CSS, Internationalization Core, SVG and XSL Working Groups as part of the Japanese Layout Task Force published Requirements of Japanese Text Layout. This document describes requirements for general Japanese layout realized with technologies like CSS, SVG and XSL-FO. The document is mainly based on a standard for Japanese layout, JIS X 4051. However, it also addresses areas which are not covered by JIS X 4051. Japanese version is also available.

This document provides a set of guidelines for developing XML documents and schemas that are internationalized properly. Following the best practices describes here allow both the developer of XML applications, as well as the author of XML content to create material in different languages.

These guidelines explain how XML application developers and XML content authors can create formats and content that enable use by speakers of a variety of languages and that facilitate the translation and localization process. Updated Working Draft: Handling Right-to-left Scripts in XHTML and HTML Content

The Internationalization Core Working Group has published an updated Working Draft of this internationalization best practices document to show progress so far.

Part of a series designed for authors, the document will provide advice for the use of XHTML or HTML markup and CSS to create pages for languages that use right-to-left scripts, such as Arabic and Hebrew. It attempts to counter many of the misunderstandings or over-complexities that currently abound.

The title has been changed to reflect that these are 'Best practices' rather than 'Techniques', and the content and format has been substantially reworked.

Specifying Language in XHTML & HTML Content

Updated Working Draft

The Internationalization GEO (Guidelines, Education & Outreach) Working Group has published an updated Working Draft of Internationalization Best Practices: Specifying Language in XHTML & HTML Content. Part of a series designed for authors, the document is an aid to specifying the language of content for an international audience.

The title has been changed to reflect that these are 'Best practises' rather than 'Techniques', and the content and format has been substantially reworked. In particular, the term 'primary language' has been replaced with references to the 'language of the intended audience'. [search key: tr-i18n-html-tech-lang]
