Design Notes
- Some of the <h2>s in the HTML might be necessary for proper structure markup and useful for people using the page non-visually; however, they do not all need to be shown in the visual rendering. (for example: <h2>Site Navigation</h2> and <h2>Quote</h2>)
- Above the fold:
- try to have all major section headings above the fold ([Who We Are], Announcements, Highlights)
- EOWG recommends having Tim's quote above the fold
- Announcements and Highlights will vary somewhat in number and length. Current Ipsum Lorem is in the middle of the range.
- We want people who are new to the page to easily see the "[Who We Are]" blurb and for repeat visitors to be able to easily "mask it out".
- Grouping: It might be good to group together the things that change, that is, announcements and highlights.
- We probably don't want Tim's photo on the home page - unless it fits nicely within the visual design. Anyway, don't want it to get too much focus, especially above the fold.
Content
- latest New Home Page content
Highlights
Purpose:
- provide a way to showcase different resources, since many people don't know what we have
- provide a space to address "hot" topics
- make the home page more "alive" with timely topics that change frequently
Examples of things that might go in highlights section:
- blurb on hot (non-tech) topic, such as standards harmonization
- blurb on just released documents
- upcoming WAI presentations
- XYZ government adopted WCAG, with a link to Policies
- technique addressing hot issue
- tip from a document, such as Evaluating Web Sites for Accessibility, with link to document
Notes:
- would not replace news/announcements as is currently on home page
- little nugget of information with link to more, not just be titles
- usually 30-40 words each (maybe less)
- would probably often have 2-4 highlights:
- some might stay longer and is a current high priority issue, such as standards harmonization
- some might change more frequently, perhaps every week, such as a technique or tip
- generally try to have one for "newbies" & one for more advanced, and one for "techies" & one for "fuzzies"
