Pre-Call for Text Customization as one topic of maybe more, or not

Subject: Pre-Call for Papers: Text Customization for Readability

The W3C WAI Research and Development Working Group (RDWG) invites you to share your experiences with text customization for readability for an online symposium to be held later this year. This pre-call for papers provides some information; more details will follow in the coming weeks.

The symposium will bring together researchers, practitioners, and users with disabilities to explore the needs of people with low vision, dyslexia, and other conditions that impact reading. The ultimate goal is to provide research-based guidance for user agent developers, standards developers, policy makers, web designers, and others to encourage them to include specific text customization functionality in mainstream web products. Draft information on the Scope and Objectives of this topic is in a wiki page at: http://www.w3.org/WAI/RD/wiki/Text_Customization_Symposium_draft_page

Related topics, such as easy-to-read language, may also be addressed in this or another symposium. To get notification of updated information on this and other RDWG symposia, see Getting WAI Announcements at http://www.w3.org/WAI/about/announcements

Dates:
We estimate paper submissions will be due on *30 July*, and the online symposia will be help in September or October. Final dates will be announced in the Call for Papers e-mail and listed on the Symposium page linked above.

Paper requirements:
Papers must be no more than 1000 words, submitted in an HTML template to be provided.

Background:
RDWG Symposia bring together researchers, practitioners, and users with disabilities interested in a particular aspect of web accessibility to advance research and development in that area. The online Symposia include a panel with the authors of accepted papers, and provide an opportunity for participants to ask questions. Symposia proceedings, transcript, and a report are available publicly online afterward. The Research and Development Working Group (RDWG) helps:
- increase accessibility considerations in research on web technologies, including mainstream research,
- suggest research questions that may contribute to web accessibility research projects,
- inform development of web accessibility solutions,
- decrease the number of potential barriers in future web-related technologies.
See the RDWG home page <http://www.w3.org/WAI/RD/> for links to an FAQ and a wiki that includes potential topics for future Symposia. We welcome your ideas on this topic and your ideas for future RDWG work. Please send comments to the publicly-archived mailing list: public-wai-rd@w3.org

If you have any questions, contact Shadi Abou-Zahra: shadi@w3.org

Feel free to circulate this message to other lists; please avoid cross-postings where possible.

--Simon Harper 16:33, 23 May 2012 (UTC) I've just removed the combined call so that it does not confuse the WAI CG if they care to look at this page:

Pre-Call on Topic 3 & 4 combined

Per 16 May e-mail, we might do a combined pre-call for two topics. This possibility is drafted below.

* Subject: Pre-Call for Papers on Text Customization and Easy-to-Read
* Subject: Pre-Call for Papers: Text Customization for Readability and Easy-to-Read Language
* Subject: Pre-Call for Text Customization and Easy-to-Read - Online Symposium

The W3C WAI Research and Development Working Group (RDWG) invites you to share your experiences with text customization for readability and easy-to-read language for online symposia to be held later this year. This pre-call for papers provides some information; more details will follow next month.

*Text Customization for Readability*

The Symposium on Text Customization for Readability will bring together researchers, practitioners, and users with disabilities to explore the needs of people with low vision, dyslexia, and other conditions that impact reading. The ultimate goal is to provide research-based guidance for user agent developers, standards developers, policy makers, web designers, and others to encourage them to include specific text customization functionality in mainstream web products.

Please see the Scope and Objectives in the symposium page at: http://www.w3.org/WAI/RD/2012/text-customization/{@@URI to be determined}

*Easy-to-Read Language*

Many rules, guidelines, and recommendations have been developed to help authoring text so that it can be read by the broadest audience possible. Also the domain of language technologies has made significant progress in automatic grammar recognition, translation, and summarizing. Is it time for a new era in the field of easy-to-read / simple language that takes advantage of these new developments?
