ERCIM CD -- WAI Section

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of ERCIM in 1999 (European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics), the ERCIM asked each member organization -- all 14 Computer Science National Labs in Europe -- to participate in a CD-ROM highlighting two important activities per institute.

For INRIA, which is the host of W3C in Europe, WAI was chosen and a multimedia presentation was designed and incorporated into the anniversary CD.

This presentation incorporates short clips of the "Web Sites That Work" video within a redesigned page layout appropriate to the CD format. Preparation of the video required an additional filming session to complete the series of clips presenting WAI activities.

The following is the entry page of the CDROM WAI section.

"The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect."
Tim Berners-Lee

Availability of digital information through the Web holds great promise for people with disabilities. The World Wide Web Consortium is promoting a high degree of usability through the Web Accessibility Initiative. WAI actions concern five primary areas of work : technology, guidelines, tools, education and outreach, and research and development.

INRIA, the institute that leads W3C in Europe, takes a significant part in the WAI actions. Daniel Dardailler, Project Manager for the Web Accessibility Initiative, works at W3C/INRIA site in Sophia Antipolis.
