Vince Darely has written a nice tcl script which works with the macintosh
shareware text editor Alpha to do just this. It could probably be
modified to work with a tcl aware app on other systems with some work.

try
ftp://www.cs.umd.edu/pub/faculty/keleher/Alpha/contrib/

Look for VinceAdditions.sit.bin

Look one directory up for Alpha.
