Webraska Mobile Technologies

Joint WAP Forum - W3C workshop on Position Dependent Services

Position Paper

Webraska is the first company in the world to have displayed a map on a GSM

screen in October 1998. It is the leading provider of traffic information and

guidance on mobile phones using WAP and relies on Europe’s largest Internet

digital map server. As such, Webraska has a considerable expertise in the areas

of cartography and internet technologies applied to mobility and location-based

services which it could bring to a high-level workshop such as the one organised

by W3C and the WAP Forum.

We specifically provide WAP services in the following areas:

- Itinerary computation

- Traffic information

- Local facilities information

These services are currently based on manual location by the user (entering

address using keypad) but are ready to integrate automatic positioning.

In terms of our company's needs in the field of position-related information,

the following would be particularly useful if addressed in the workshop:

- Obtaining reliable positioning information: will phones provide their position

directly or will there be an intermediary server

- Delay for obtaining this information in either case

- Will this information be available to all developers or just to some depending

on the service they provide.

- Obtaining history of n-previous positions

- Tracking

- Roaming
