FUJITSU's Position Our aim is to discuss which definition of HTML should be the subset for mobile access as a member of the Compact HTML submission. As a manufacturer of cellular phones, we have proposed the Compact HTML considering web access from small devices of the future such as smart phones and PDAs. We consider that the HTML for mobile access should be the subset of HTML 3.2, 4.0, or the future version. The function of HTML for mobile devices must be limited so that they can make th Web access with limited resources, however, with technical development in the future they should achieve full function according to the HTML definition. If the HTML definition particular to mobile access is introduced, mobile devices with limited resources will have to support more functions than PCs do. This seems to contradict original purpose. Also the unique definition prevents conventional environments such as PCs from making the Web access. This seems far from the concept of the Web whose information can be shared by anyone. The subset for mobile devices should be defined according to such demand as accessibility. We also intend to discuss the access protocol for mobile devices.
