Test results: Line breaking, opening & closing punctuation and non-starters

This page summarises results for a series of tests that seek to establish how user agents support line breaking around Unicode characters described by the Unicode Standard Annex #14 Line Breaking Properties as opening and closing punctuation and non-starters. The behaviour described in the Annex for the characters listed here is informative, but many of the characters need to behave as described to correctly support line break rules for Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

Note that small kana characters are described in a separate test and results page.

Results

In the table below, characters in the column 'Y' behaved as expected according to the Line Breaking Properties Unicode Annex. Those in the 'N' column did not. To find out the names and Unicode codepoints of the characters, copy them and paste them into the 'Cut & paste' field at the top of the UniView Unicode database viewer page.

Summary

The version of Opera tested treats all characters as described in the Unicode Annex.

Tested Internet Explorer and the Gecko-based browser versions, on average, handle just less than half the characters as described. Internet Explorer handles slightly more than the Gecko-based browsers as described.
