1 December 2003: the W3C Spanish Office has a new staff member in the person of Jose Manuel Alonso. Jose will be responsible for the technical coordination of the office activities. Jose has a degree in informatics and a good experience working with W3C Recommendations.

17 October, 2003: W3C is pleased to announce the opening of the W3C Spanish Office in Oviedo, Spain. The Office is hosted by the Fundación para el Fomento de la Investigación Científica y la Tecnología (FICYT) . The office manager is Francisco Sanchez. 17 October, 2003: Co-organized by the China Computer Federation and the W3C Office in Hong Kong, the China International Forum on WWW's Development 2003 will be held in Beijing, China on 12-13 November. W3C Team members Judy Brewer, Ivan Herman, Philipp Hoschka, Matt May and Richard Ishida present keynotes and tutorials. Attendees will also participate on a panel on W3C in China. Registration is open.

Right arrow bullet W3C Day in Sydney, 18 August 2003

International experts at this year's W3C Day include Ivan Herman (W3C Head of Offices), Paul Cotton (W3C Technical Architecture Group and Microsoft), Michael Sperberg-McQueen (W3C Architecture Domain Lead). The W3C Day is an annual opportunity for Australian IT professionals to hear from, and meet some of the driving forces in web standards today. Topics to be covered at the event include, XML Query, semantic web and Web Services.

Right arrow bullet New Manager for the W3C Hong Kong Office

From 1 July 2003, Prof. Vincent Shen returned to the HK University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and took up the role as the Manager of the W3C Office in Hong Kong again after 3 years' secondment to the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Vincent joined HKUST in 1990 as Founding Head of the Computer Science Department. His research interests include: Internet Computing, handling of Chinese information on the Web and Software Engineering. In November 1998, Vincent helped to establish the Hong Kong Office at HKUST and he served as the Office Head until he was seconded by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to serve as a Science Advisor in September 2000. He partnered with a team of local organizing committee to bring the Tenth International World Wide Web Conference to Hong Kong in May 2001. He also served as the General Co-chairman at the event.

After his return, besides leading the office to perform its usual Office roles, Vincent would like to continue focusing on Web internationalization issues in the region, especially on a greater involvement from mainland China.

W3C also wishes to express its gratitude to T.C. Pong who served as a Manager of the W3C Hong Kong Office in the period between 2000 and 2003, and hopes to see him on various W3C related events in the future.

Nóra Vásárhelyi joined the staff of the Hungarian Office as a co-ordinator on July 1st, 2003. Nóra received her B.S. in Engineering at Jyväskylä Polytechnic, Finland, in 2002, and her M.Sc. in Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Debrecen, in Hungary, in 2003. On the technical side, Nóra's interest are in various W3C technologies, but also e-learning standards and other e-learning topics. Nóra will help Éva Megyaszai in coordinating the offices' activities.

Tony Fung has joined the Hong Kong Office staff as a technical officer. He provides technical understandings on W3C developed technologies to the office. He helps to provide supports or comments to local members and people who are interested to know more about W3C's technical activities. His main interests are applying W3C technologies with Java in mobile environments. He received his MPhil degree in Computer Science from HK University of Science and Technology.

2 April 2003: The W3C Finnish Office organizes a one-day event "Semantic Web and Web Services: Semantic Web is Here -- Are You Ready?" to be held in Helsinki, Finland on 6 May. The seminar will introduce the concepts behind the buzzwords. Most talks are in Finnish and Ivan Herman (W3C) and Suresh Chande (Nokia) will speak in English. The event is free and open to the public.

24 April 2003: W3C holds a series of one day events in Rome, London, Munich, Athens and Brussels from 10-24 June. The W3C Semantic Tour promotes W3C technologies that bring to the Web more effective discovery, automation, integration, and reuse of data. Organizers come from the W3C Italy, UK and Ireland, Germany, Greece and Benelux Offices. All events are open to the public and free of charge.

28 March 2003: The China International Forum on WWW's Development 2003 to be held in Beijing, China on 16-17 April has been postponed. W3C and the W3C Office in Hong Kong regret the inconvenience to everyone who planned to attend the event. Once they have been determined, new dates will be publicized.

Right arrow bullet Staff Changes at the Greek Office

1 February 2003: due to his busy teaching and research schedule Constantine Stephanidis retires as Manager of the Greek Office. Constantine was the main force behind the creation of the Greek Office; W3C wishes to express its gratitude for the work and time he has given to W3C so far, and hopes to see him on various W3C related events in the future.

Starting 1st of February, 2003, the new manager of the Greek Office is the current co-ordinator of the office, Evangelos Markatos. Evangelos received his diploma in Computer Engineering from the University of Patras in 1988, and the M.S and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Rochester, New York, in 1990 and 1993 respectively. Since 1992, he is an associated Researcher of the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (ICS-FORTH) where he is currently the head of the Advanced Computing Systems group. Since 1994 he has also a position as an Associate Professor at the Computer Science Department of the University of Crete.

There are also other changes in the Office Staff. The new co-ordinator of the Office is Ioannis Pachoulakis, who will replace Evangelos and the former deputy co-ordinator, Ioannis Basdekis. Ioannis received a B.S. in Physics at the University of Crete, Greece, in 1988, a Ph.D. in Astrophysics in 1996 and a Masters of Science in Engineering in 1998 from the University of Pennsylvania. He worked in client-server application developments in the following years; since 2001, he is a researcher at the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology (FORTH-ICS).

Finally, Anna Doxastaki will help Evangelos and Ioannis in their work as secretary of the Office. W3C welcomes the new staff members and wishes success to the departing staff members.

1 January 2003: from the 1st of January, 2003, Tarja Systä retires as Manager of the Finnish Office due to her busy teaching and research schedule at the Technical University of Tampere. Tarja was the main force behind the creation of the Finnish Office in 2002, and it is largely due to her dedication that the Office could be launched successfully in October 2002. W3C wishes to express its gratitude for the work and time she has given to W3C so far, and hopes to see her on various W3C related events in the future.

The new Manager of the Office is Ossi Nykänen. He graduated with honors as a computer scientist at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, in 1997. In 2001 he received the degree of Licentiate of Technology in mathematics at the Tampere University of Technology, Finland. Before joining the W3C Office, Ossi worked as a researcher and a teacher of hypermedia at the Tampere University of Technology.

Ossi has been already active as the Office Co-ordinator since September 2002 and was the webmaster for the newly created Finnish Office homepage. He also played a very important role in the official opening event of the Office in October 2002. W3C is sure that his energy and dedication will ensure the success of the Office in future, and welcomes him as a new Office Manager.

1 January 2003: following the initiative of the W3C Home Page design, the Offices' central home page has also been redesigned for newer, standards-compliant user agents. The design features table-less columns using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), better accessibility, and uses XHTML 1.0 strict. The individual home pages of the various Offices will also be redesigned accordingly in the first half of 2003.

1 January 2003: the Italian W3C Office organizes a tutorial on SVG, in Pisa, at the headquarters of the Office, on the 10th of January, 2003. The tutorial will be given by Ivan Herman, Head of Offices at W3C. Registration is free. For further details, see the event page of the Italian Office.

Andrew Wood and Hoylen Sue, Australian Office, give a series of seminars on Web Services.
