Veon – Interactive Media Applications

As the two worlds of information and entertainment media come together and as Internet based solutions provide higher rates of information delivery, interactive designers and programmers are creating new types of applications to offer their viewers. Applications that will deliver rich and dynamic multimedia but will also provide the user means to control and interact. To create and deploy these applications a new breed of systems has shown up. These systems integrate a wide range of Web and video servers, databases, advertising servers, consumer profiling systems, and e-commerce servers, offering content that is personalized, delivered on demand and seamlessly integrated with e-commerce transactions, programming and services.

Veon offers a complete solution for creating, deploying, and managing convergence media on all bandwidths – broadcasting and broadband, the Internet and intranets – and for every application, from enhanced programming services to interactive advertising, e-commerce, corporate training and distance learning.

Veon’s Servers

Veon’s application servers focus on the following to provide adequate solutions:

Cross platform and scalability – Veon’s servers all scale to facilitate the deployment of interactive media via Web sites and intranets, broadbad services that reach TVs as well as PCs via modems, and cable-and satellite-based broadcast systems.

Video centric application – Veon has pioneered HyperVideo runtime software and authoring tools that allow programmers to track objects through video and to synchronize different graphical elements with the video itself. Using interactive video people can interact with the video itself and with objects within it.

Elaborated Application logic – Veon servers support applications that store and manipulate meta-information relating to the application. They allow application writers to employ much more sophisticated logic than standard HTML while not getting into programming. This extensive application logic allows adequate integration of external databases, advertising or e-commerce servers to complete the user’s experience.

Veon server set include:

Veon Media Activation Server. To take advantage of SMIL—the new open standard for creating and deploying time-based Web pages combining text, images, video, and audio—Veon’s Media Activation Server allows Web publishers and content providers to deploy customized, choreographed, streaming multimedia presentations based on existing database assets, automatically and on the fly. No changes to the existing assets are required—publishers and content providers are now able to repurpose and add value to their existing media assets.

Veon Media Interaction Server. Building on the capabilities of the Media Activation Server, the Media Interaction Server delivers interactive streaming media and also integrates with tracking, profiling, advertising, and e-commerce servers. Making media assets interactive on a time- and -object basis, the Interaction Server supports interactive entertainment programs, customized news and information delivery, shopping, play-along game and sports programming.

Work to date

As well as providing tools for creation and deployment of interactive video applications on the World Wide Web, Veon is working closely with enhanced broadband programming and service providers who want to use interactive video and other convergence applications to differentiate themselves from traditional Internet services. Veon is providing these broadband services – delivered over cable systems, ADSL networks and satellites – a complete solution for interactive video based application deployment.
