W4A Round up and what we all did?

shadi: There were several sessions at W4A that were interesting:
... discussion on mobile that relates to the RDWG Mobile accessiblity note
... During W4A camp interesting ideas for futures developments were discussed:
... convergence of web and print
... what meaning of word like "accessibility", "acces for all". this could be relevant for the RDWG TAAR.

sharper: High quality of scientific presentations at W4A.
... The joint panel session of WWW and W4A managed to highlight some interesting topics.
... Giorgio chaired the W4C camp. There will be a documentation for everyone to read.
... We tried to invite new members to RDWG. Not much response. We need to plan this more carefully for the next event.
... There were good discussions on policy, ageing, and more topics.

shadi: Which emerging topics are interesting for RDWG?
... Discussion on augmented reality and how this could help disabled persons. "glass technology" relevant for blind people, but also for hearing impaired people. RDWG should explore use cases and challenges.

<scribe> ... New term "cognitive assistance" instead of "assistive technology".

Vivienne: W4A had good discussion during session on user testing and the role of user testing, how to best conduct it. There were outstanding contributions to the Paciello group challenge.
... Discussion of accessibility of ebooks and epub standard. Suggest to have a RDWG catalogue entry.

sharper: Next year's theme is "the wearable web".

shadi: There were 15 people at the ??? W3C-track.
... researchers, practitioners, and people from government.
... Observation: People are still unaware of basis concepts. (E.g. does accessbility apply to older people?)
... WAI needs to explain better about accessibility and its horizontal aspects. This applies to the accessibility community in general.
... We need to work on the message!

sharper: any more comments on W4A?

<Vivienne> only that Perth won!

<sharper> +1!

Vivienne: The 2017 event is going to be in Perth.

sharper: The Australian accessibility community is quite active.

Vivienne: Many people will take the opportunity to participate in the event in Australia.

sharper: next year W4A will be extended to 3 days.

STANDING - Next Symposium Topic

<sharper> https://www.w3.org/WAI/RD/wiki/Accreditation

Vivienne: These are the changes to the accreditation catalogue entry.
... All changes from the first questionnaire are incorporated.
... Apart from request for more references.
... If anyone has more references, please add them to the wiki.

<Yehya> +1

annika: +1

<Justin> +1

<Vivienne> +1

shadi: Is the first paragraph under research goals part of the challenges?

Vivienne: Maybe that sentence needs rephrasing.
... The paragraph will be moved to the other heading.

shadi: This is an interesting topic. But there are no many research aspects.

<Vivienne> I've got that paragraph moved up now.

shadi: Topics like augmented reality are more relevant for future research.
... We need a selection of different kinds of topics.

<shadi> +1

sharper: thanks for your work, Vivienne.

RESOLUTION: The accreditation catalogue entry is complete.

<sharper> https://www.w3.org/2002/09/wbs/47076/rdwgf2f/

sharper: Face-to-face meeting in 2014.

4 people could attend a meeting a ICCHP in Paris.

scribe: how can we create a meeting with a subset of RDWG members?

<Vivienne> Doesn't the attendance of meetings mainly relate to funding availability?

shadi: Yes, it's possible to have a smaller group meeting.
... And report back to the whole group.
... Face-to-face meeting are useful to get some work done, e.g. reports.

sharper: next step: find out if we can get a room at ICCHP.
... Continue the discussion next week, when more people have filled in the survey. And try to find topics for a subgroup meeting at ICCHP.

shadi: Will check with organisers if a room is available.
... then we will do a formal registration.

<Vivienne> next symposium?

STANDING - Any Other Business

shadi: I had a discussion of someone from University of Southhampton about accessibility for people with mental disorder.
... That could become a new research topic.

<shadi> http://www.w3.org/2014/02/wot/

shadi: Paper in W3C workshop on Web of things. Maybe a symposium about this topic can be organised.
... together with PFWG.

Vivienne: What is the next symposium topic?

sharper: currently not much progress.
... Plan to ask people to run symposia on specific topics.
... No answer from Markku and Gerado.

Vivienne: Maybe we can have a symposium on ebook accessibility.
... Or should we start with a catalogue entry?

shadi: Chet Cooper from ability magazine could be interesting in running the symposium, together with someone from RDWG. This could be an exciting topic.
... Suggestion: Start with a wiki entry and identify topics and research questions for a symposium.

Vivienne: I can start a wiki entry.

shadi: That would be great. Thanks.
