Proposed Data Usage Vocabulary Definition

The Data Usage vocabulary will embody different ways humans and machines interact with data on the web, how data can be connected to other web resources, and any constraints or limitations on the web data. This vocabulary is intended to be extensible recognizing that data usage will vary across web communities and will require customization for specific implementations. While extensibility is important for customization, we envision communities that rely upon the Data Usage Vocabulary also gain an important advantage of being able to compare and cross reference data usage techniques used in different domain implementations.

Different classes of data usage includes:

  • Application usage: How data was used/can be used by software, things, and humans.
  • Advanced processing usage: How data was/can be processed in B2B pipelines, data production, and analytical activities.
  • Data connectivity:   Logic describing why required or suggested inter-relationships are needed between datasets for usage. This includes data being citated in web-based scholarly publications
  • Limitations:  specific constraints or limitations on data including: lifespan, availability, and audiences.
