MPTF/MPTF Discussions//Continuous Streaming 2

From Web and TV IG

Submitter: CableLabs

Tracker Issue ID: ISSUE-35

Description:

HTML5 video and audio tags should support continuous streaming as is common in traditional television and radio broadcast channels. This might be done by continually appending finite media segments, but there might also be a single segment that has no defined length.

  1. This must work for both adaptive and non-adaptive codecs.

Motivation:

  1. Support for linear television programming and continuous streaming over the Internet.

Dependencies:

  1. None

What needs to be standardized

  1. One or more methods need to be defined for specifying continuous media streams. (e.g. individual segments with “append” or monolithic streams of undefined length)
  2. A method for a consistent time base must be developed in order to support ad insertion, synchronized media, etc.
